Dr. Jay Austen is the chief of the division of plastic and reconstructive surgery at Massachusetts General Hospital and Harvard Medical School. Dr. Austen received an undergraduate degree from Princeton University and a medical degree from Harvard Medical School. He trained in general surgery and plastic surgery at Harvard Medical School and completed a fellowship in craniofacial surgery at the Royal Children’s Hospital in Melbourne, Australia.
The Austen laboratory focuses on translational research in the field of plastic and reconstructive surgery, with an emphasis on moving novel concepts from the benchtop to the bedside through device development. Currently, the four primary areas of interest in his laboratory are autologous fat transplantation, prevention of vein graft intimal hyperplasia, migraine surgery, and skin rejuvenation.
Dr. Austen has a long history of clinical and basic science innovation. He has a particular interest in device design, with numerous prototypes in development related to anti-aging and rejuvenation. A number of his techniques have led to funded start-up companies. Dr. Austen is a member of numerous societies, including the Society of University Surgeons, the American College of Surgeons, the American Association of Plastic Surgeons, and the American Society of Plastic Surgeons.
