Population Health Management Fellowship & Resident Elective

Mass General Brigham’s Center for Population Health announces a dynamic fellowship opportunity ideal for those interested or working in the field Population health management.

Opportunities to spark innovation for the next generation of population health leaders

Population Health Management is a recognized solution to improving quality of care and reducing health care costs. Currently, there are limited pathways for training clinical and administrative leaders in population health management. To address this, Mass General Brigham Population Health created the Population Health Fellowship and Resident Elective Rotation. These comprehensive learning and educational programs provide direct experience and leadership development opportunities to spark innovation for the next generation of Population Health leaders.

Apply through September 30th for the Population Health Management Fellowship Program.

About the 2023 PHM Fellowship Program

The 2023 Population Health Management (PHM) Fellowship application period is now open! This one-to-two-year program is offered to graduating residents who are board-eligible. In this program, each Fellow spends roughly 30% of their time doing clinical work, with the remainder of the time spent focusing on operational framework, programmatic infrastructure, didactic training and working closely with Population Health clinical leaders. The objective is for each Fellow to gain an understanding of the context for population health and an expertise in developing, implementing, and analyzing population health management strategies.

  • Applications due: September 30, 2022
  • Fellow decision notifications: November 1, 2022
  • Fellowship commences: July, 2023

  • Applicants must be graduates from an ACGME accredited residency program.
  • Fellows will be chosen based on their level of understanding and interest in population health management, their commitment to principles of value-based care, as well as demonstration of leadership capabilities and potential.
  • Application must include CV, two letters of recommendation and a letter of interest.
  • This fellowship includes participation in the Harvard Program in Clinical Effectiveness. The clinical effectiveness field of study prepares students for clinical research responsibilities and for leadership roles in evaluating and improving all aspects of health care delivery. The field of study is focused on identifying the most appropriate, ethical, and cost-effective means of providing health care through prevention, early-detection, and treatment. Each fellow applicant must meet Harvard’s requirements for participation in the program; this is a separate application process.
  • The first year will consist of managing and presenting short term population health projects as well as beginning a longer-term project that can potentially be scaled during the second year. During the first year, fellows without a prior advanced degree will have the optional opportunity to begin a part-time MPH program at the Harvard T. H. Chan School of Public Health (HSPH), fully funded by Mass General Brigham Population Health.
  • During the second year, each fellow will lead the scaling of projects from their first year, as well as have opportunities to experience other areas of population health. For fellows who choose to enroll in HSPH in Year 1, this second year is necessary for them to complete their MPH.

To apply, please send the completed application form and any auxiliary materials to: ksperry@partners.org.

Following completion of the Population Health Leadership Fellowship, the Fellow will be able to:

  • Understand the socioeconomic and political context for population health management
  • Describe financial and operational considerations for an Accountable Care Organization
  • Describe appropriate population health strategies based on patient populations and needs
  • Analyze outcomes of population health strategies and make recommendations regarding program scale and scope
  • Experience leading a team and managing large scale operations and projects
  • Gain knowledge and skills through product development, and program implementation

Resident elective rotation for medical residents

This two or four week program provides residents with an introduction to population health. During the rotation, each resident spends time shadowing clinical leaders to learn about the context for and the development and implementation of population health management programs. The resident will be immersed in a Core Program of their choosing, developing a foundational knowledge of population health and leaving with a strong understanding of systematic approaches to program operations.  Population Health accepts up to ten residents for this program each year.
