On July 20, 2022, Meredith Fisher, PhD, partner at Mass General Brigham Ventures, gave an Innovation Grand Rounds on strategies for early-stage investments and company creation.
Mass General Brigham Ventures is an early-stage venture capital firm that invests exclusively in life science companies founded on technologies and intellectual property, created by Mass General Brigham’s vast research community. In her Grand Rounds, Dr. Fisher provided an overview of the Mass General Brigham Ventures (MGBV) investment strategy and discussed how investigators within the Mass General Brigham system can partner with the MGBV team. Dr. Fisher’s talk also addressed why academics should consider founding a new company or “newco” as a path to commercialization and provided detailed information about the types of resources investigators need to form a newco.
Founding a newco enables scientific founders to be part of the translational path for their science and increase the potential impact of their discoveries. Academia is a rich source of new technology and the translation of this work into new products and therapies is a key driver of life science innovation.
