Mary Ellen Schopp has officially been named Chief Human Resources Officer (CHRO) for Mass General Brigham, where she will continue to lead systemwide people initiatives, develop strategies to support our employees through change, and contribute to advancing our organizational transformation.

Schopp brings significant experience leading multi-faceted human resources teams at large, academic health organizations. She has served as Chief Human Resources Officer and Senior Vice President at both Baptist Health and Rush University Medical Center, where she focused on business strategy and leadership, cultural transformation, talent planning and development, and diversity, equity, and inclusion. Prior to her time in healthcare, Schopp served in senior leadership positions in HR in the consumer product industry and has extensive experience in executive coaching. She has served as Mass General Brigham interim CHRO since the fall of 2023 and served previously as a Principal Consultant at New Hemispheres Consulting.

“I am passionate about enhancing the employee experience and well-being to build a strong organizational culture where all members of our workforce feel a sense of belonging,” said Schopp. “I am excited to lead the Mass General Brigham employee engagement initiatives, promote continuous learning, champion transparency, and foster a collaborative and patient-centric culture.”

In the role, Schopp will lead core human resources functions within the system, such as talent management, employee and labor relations, diversity, equity and inclusion, and human resources operations. She will also design and implement strategies for attracting, developing, and retaining a top-tier workforce as well as steward key initiatives such as the Clinician Experience effort and the analysis and action-planning around systemwide Employee Experience Survey.

Deeply committed to focusing on well-being and fostering inclusive practices, she brings these principles into her leadership decisions, ensuring that actions and policies not only support but also uplift every member of the workforce.

“Over the past nine months, Mary Ellen has proven to be an invaluable member of my leadership team,” said Anne Klibanski, MD, president and CEO of Mass General Brigham. “She is deeply committed to supporting our employees and has already demonstrated her ability to lead a critically important part of our organization.”
