David Ryan, MD
David Ryan, MD

Mass General Brigham has announced David Ryan, MD, as the inaugural President of the Mass General Brigham Cancer Institute. In this role, Dr. Ryan will lead efforts to build the Mass General Brigham Cancer Institute, overseeing its clinical care, research, education and community-based missions, as teams work together to enhance quality outcomes for every patient and continue to drive leading-edge discovery and research-infused care.

This is a crucial step in Mass General Brigham’s work to build the Mass General Brigham Cancer Institute. ‌For more than a year, clinicians, scientists, researchers, and staff have come together to develop and implement a strategy and vision for the future of cancer care. This work has included a comprehensive strategic planning process, the development of a vision for truly integrated, research-infused cancer care, the launch of a public-facing campaign, and recently-announced investments in hospital campuses, technology and workforce.

Dr. Ryan has been a medical oncologist at Mass General Brigham for over two decades and has served as physician-in-chief for the Mass General Brigham Cancer Institute for the past year. He has also served as the chief of hematology/oncology and clinical director of the Mass General Cancer Center since 2012.

As the Shelby Memorial Professor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School, Dr. Ryan’s career is dedicated to serving all patients with cancer, inclusive of his expertise in designing and conducting clinical trials for patients with gastrointestinal cancers. Dr. Ryan's contributions have earned him recognition on numerous national committees, including multiple task forces for the National Cancer Institute, the National Comprehensive Cancer Network and the American Society of Clinical Oncology.

Moving forward, Dr. Ryan will continue to work with Mass General Brigham’s cancer leaders to guide the development of the Mass General Brigham Cancer Institute: Gerard Doherty, MD, surgeon-in-chief, Mass General Brigham Cancer Institute; Daphne Haas-Kogan, MD, radiation oncologist-in-chief, Mass General Brigham Cancer Institute; and E. Antonio Chiocca, MD, PhD, executive director, Center for Tumors of the Nervous System, Mass General Brigham Cancer Institute.
