Amelia was taken by ambulance to Brigham and Women’s Faulkner Hospital, where she received care for flu, pneumonia, and sepsis. “It was a frightening situation,” Amelia said. “I managed to get immediate care for Arthur and our dogs, but it was stressful.”
After two days in the hospital, Amelia was stable and eligible to transition to Home Hospital for the remainder of her care. This service allowed her to continue receiving hospital-level care, including IV antibiotics and regular bloodwork, from the comfort of her own home.
“When I learned that I could receive hospital services at home with no additional costs, I was eager to try it,” Amelia said. “I wanted Arthur to be able to see me whenever he wanted in a familiar environment. Home Hospital let my son see for himself that Mommy was okay.”
Amelia described her care team at Brigham and Women’s Faulkner Hospital as “start-to-finish fantastic.” After choosing Home Hospital, she was headed home within the hour. “My transition team collaborated and thought of everything—they made me feel like a celebrity,” she said.
Clinicians visited regularly, and all Amelia’s medications were delivered directly to her home. “It was seamless,” she said. “My medical information moved perfectly, and I could see blood results on Patient Gateway right away. Also, it was clear my nurses were in close communication with each other. They worked as a team, reaching out to colleagues and answering my questions within moments.”
Amelia believed that receiving care at home would help her to heal faster. “I knew if my body were relaxed in my own home, it would make a difference,” said Amelia. “I was happy to go to the kitchen and make my own meals. Additionally, being around our dogs was therapeutic for me.”
For many patients, managing a hospitalization—either planned or unplanned—is stressful. Home Hospital eases burdens by offering eligible patients and families more flexibility in how and where they receive needed care. Through innovation, Home Hospital is continually individualizing and transforming patient care.
“This option was such a benefit to me,” Amelia said. “Each person who came to my home was completely focused on me and my treatment.”
Amelia noted that team members, including nurses, delivery staff, technicians, and others, were remarkably compassionate. “Absolutely every member of the team who came to my house was amazingly kind—I felt as if I had somehow dropped into ‘Pleasantville’!” she said. “I recommend Home Hospital to anyone who qualifies. It was Five Star service.”
