Mass General Brigham hospitals are ranked as top hospitals in the nation by U.S. News & World Report

August 1, 2023 – Boston, MA – Five Mass General Brigham hospitals, Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH), Brigham and Women’s Hospital (BWH), McLean, Mass Eye and Ear, and Spaulding Rehabilitation were once again named among the top hospitals in the nation by U.S. News and World Report and each also earned high marks in multiple clinical specialties. MGH and BWH are again on the U.S. News “Best Hospitals” honor roll while McLean Hospital was named #1 in the nation for psychiatry. Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital earned the #2 spot for rehabilitation and Mass Eye and Ear ranked #4 for ophthalmology and #7 for otolaryngology (ear, nose, and throat).  

For the second year, BWH earned the top honor in Obstetrics & Gynecology (OBGYN), ranking #1 in the nation. In total, 11 unique specialties at MGH and BWH were recognized in the top 10 nationally.  

  • MGH: #2 psychiatry, #4 ophthalmology (in partnership with MEE), #7 diabetes and endocrinology, #6 rheumatology, #7 ear, nose and throat (in partnership with MEE), #8 cardiology and heart surgery, #8 neurology and neurosurgery, and #9 orthopedics.    

  • BWH: #1 obstetrics and gynecology, #5 cancer (with Dana-Farber as the Dana-Farber Brigham Cancer Center), and #5 rheumatology.

In addition, five of Mass General Brigham’s community hospitals were recognized as “high performing” in specific specialties/conditions - the highest award a hospital can earn in the publisher’s Common Adult Procedure and Condition Ratings. They include:  

  • Newton-Wellesley Hospital was ranked #6 in the Boston Metro Area and #8 in Massachusetts (both tied with Brigham and Women’s Faulkner Hospital) Newton-Wellesley was also recognized as high performing for treatment in nine procedures/conditions: COPD, colon cancer surgery, diabetes, heart failure, hip fracture, kidney failure, knee replacement, lung cancer surgery, and pneumonia. 

  • Brigham and Women’s Faulkner Hospital was ranked #6 in the Boston Metro Area and #8 in Massachusetts (both tied with Newton-Wellesley Hospital). The hospital was ranked nationally for specialized diabetes and endocrinology care and recognized as high performing for treatment in six procedures/conditions: congestive heart failure, diabetes, kidney failure, knee replacement, pneumonia and prostate cancer surgery. 

  • Salem Hospital was ranked #8 in the Boston Metro Area and #10 in Massachusetts. The hospital was also recognized as high performing for treatment in seven procedures/conditions: COPD, diabetes, heart attack, heart failure, kidney failure, lung cancer surgery, and stroke. 

  • Martha’s Vineyard Hospital was recognized as high performing for treatment in COPD. 

  • Wentworth-Douglass Hospital was recognized as high performing for treatment in heart failure.
